Gizmo5 (formerly known as Gizmo Project) is a freeware IM client, VOIP client, and an open source alternative to Skype, that's available on a variety of operating systems and mobile devices. It uses open standards for call management, the Session Initiation Protocol and Jabber. But it uses several proprietary codecs, and like Skype, the Gizmo5 client is proprietary/closed source software. It can interoperate with other SIP networks directly which avoids the phone system and can also contact other users using Gizmo5. Gizmo5 users can also have voicemail. SMS someone and also record calls, making it useful for replacing a recording.

Gizmo5 also has an IM built in, allowing you to chat with buddies on AIM, MSN, Yahoo! and Google. It also allows for customizable avatars and it allows for a chat history when your IM'ing your friends. Which allows you to keep track of the conversation and to reference it in a situation. Gizmo5 also has the ability to transfer files and can also start up a group chat. Gizmo5 can also start a video chat between 2 users, both users must have webcams.

[edit] Usage in TalkShoe

It's recommended by TalkShoe as a VOIP client, mostly because of the SIP interoperability. It is used as an cheaper alternative to dial into landlines and it's also used as another way to take calls instead of the mandatory landline or VOIP options. It is also used as another way to chat amongst one another. Through the use of text and through the use of voice. Should the user not want to use Skype. It can also be used as an alternate IM'ing client instead of installing all 3 IM clients, Interoperating them together into one. Another usage for it is that you can dial into TalkShoe wirelessly because Gizmo5 is available for a variety of Mobile Devices and Smartphones and the client itself does support SIP.
